Course objectives
Main objectives can be summarized as follows:
- to learn basics of Latin grammatical system;
- to understand functions of grammatical categories;
- to learn grammatical terminology;
- to learn how to analyze and produce basic verbal and nominal forms;
- to understand basic syntactic structures;
- to remember a set of basic lexical units and match them with words in Romance languages;
The knowledge of Latin vocabulary and basic grammatical principles provides students with solid bases for their future studies of Romance languages, because their grammars are in some respects very similar to the Latin one.
Syllabus
  • 1. Latin and its evolution, periods, pronunciation, alphabet. Grammatical categories of noun, basic terminology. 1st declension.
  • 2. Introduction to conjugation, grammatical categories of verb. Verbs of the 1st conjugation: present, imperfect and future indicative.
  • 3. Nouns of the 2nd declension. Adjectives of the 1st and 2nd declencions and their adverbs. Verb esse and its compounds.
  • 4. Verbs of the 2nd conjugation: present, imperfect and future indicative.
  • 5. Nouns of the 3rd declension. Basic information about personal, possessive, demonstrative and relative pronouns.
  • 6. Verbs of the 3rd and 4th conjugation: present, imperfect and future indicative. Deponent verbs. TEST.
  • 7. Construction of double accusative and nominative. Accusative-with-infinitive construction.
  • 8. Adjectives of the 3rd declension. Adverbs. Present participle.
  • 9. Comparison of adjectives and adverbs.
  • 10. Nouns of the 4th and 5th declension. Numerals. TEST.
  • 11.-12. Present and imperfect subjunctive of all conjugations and the verb esse. Their use in simple and complex sentence (conditional and final clauses, cum historicum).
  • 13. Revision.
  • Final test.

Assessment methods
Lectures, practise, homework. Active class participation. Maximum of 3 unexcused absences. Two tests during the course and final test (70%, written form).
