Course objectives
Main objectives of the course can be summarized as follows:
- to learn basics of Latin grammatical system;
- to understand functions of grammatical categories;
- to learn grammatical terminology;
- to learn how to analyze and produce basic verbal and nominal forms;
- to understand basic syntactic structures;
- to remember a set of basic lexical units and match them with words in Romance languages;
- to read easy Latin texts (including the original ones).
The knowledge of Latin vocabulary and basic grammatical principles provides students with solid bases for their future studies of Romance languages, because their grammars are in some respects very similar to the Latin one.
Syllabus
  • 1. Revision, perfect indicative (active and pasive).
  • 2. Perfect indicative - excercises.
  • 3. Other indicatives formed from the perfect stem (plusquamperfect and exact future)
  • 4. Subordinated indicative clauses expressing anteriority.
  • 5. Future participles, future infinitives and supine.
  • 6. Future participles and infinitives - excercises; posteriority in subordinated clauses.
  • 7. Perfect and plusquamperfect subjunctive. Test.
  • 8. Consecution of tenses; indirect questions.
  • 9. Ablative absolute.
  • 10. Nominative-with-infinitive construction.
  • 11.-12. Gerund, gerundive constructions.
  • 13. Revision.
  • Final test.

Assessment methods
Lectures, excercises, reading Latin texts, homeworks. Active class participation (maximum of three unexcused absences). One written test during the semester and another, final one (for both: minimum of 70% for passing out).
