Předpokladem porozumění výkladu je základní znalost alespoň jednoho románského jazyka (italštiny, španělštiny, francouzštiny). Předmět je přednostně určen studentům, kteří si již osvojili základy filologické práce (od třetího ročníku bakalářského studia). Studenti nižších ročníků se zájmem o zápis do předmětu nechť v ISu po začátku zápisu v aplikaci "Žádost o výjimku" požádají o výjimku (souhlas se zápisem předmětu) a zdůvodní svoji žádost.

Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce empirical and theoretical issues to be dealt with in research into the Lingua Franca, i.e., the language used in interethnic as well as interreligious communication in the Mediterranean from 11th to 19th centuries.
Syllabus
  • 1. Lingua Franca, historical conditions of its rise.
  • 2. The history of research into Lingua Franca, hypotheses about its origin and development.
  • 3. Analysis of the text: Topographia e historia general de Argel (1612).
  • 4. Analysis of the text: Dictionnaire de la Langue Franque ou Petit Mauresque (1830).
  • 5. Lingua Franca in literature (Orlando di Lasso, Molière, Carlo Goldoni).
  • 6. Survey and analysis of other texts: minor reports.
  • 7. Survey and analysis of other texts: minor literary texts.
  • 8. System of Lingua Franca? Vocabulary, grammar.
  • 9. Influences of Lingua Franca on other language varieties: british slang Polari.
  • 10. Notions pidgin, creole, lingua franca and koiné in mutual relationships.
  • 11. The role of Lingua Franca in creolistics, generalization of the notion lingua franca, modern lingua francas.
  • 12. So-called Lingua Franca Nova, or a new search of the perfect language.

Teaching methods
The theoretical part of the lesson contains the lectures on various aspects of the research into Lingua Franca. The practical part of the lesson is aimed at analyzing the attested texts written in Lingua Franca.
Assessment methods
Written test examining the knowledge of basic notions and their relations (based on the lectures and recommended literature). Minimum pass level 60 %.
