Course objectives
This course surveys the literary works in the region of historical Macedonia in the 19th and early 20th centuries, working with respective texts. It focuses on the National Awakening and the impact of foreign propaganda, the significance of folklore and its collectores, various conceptions of the possible shape of literary Macedonian language (Gjorgjija Pulevski, Grigor Prličev, Stojan Novaković, Dimitar Makedonski, Kuzman Šapkarev and others). We also look into the manifestations of romanticism in Macedonian literature (works of the Miladinov Brothers, Grigor Prličev and Rajko Žinzifov), and we survey the double nationality/ multinationality and double- or multiculturality of the authors. Other topics inculde: the drama works of Vojdan Černodrinski (Macedonian Blood Wedding), Macedonian separatism of the 1880s and 1890s, and Krsto Petkov Misirkov’s prominent early 20th century work: Za makedonckite raboti.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction, overview of the literature available on the topic. Situation in the Macedonian region in the course of the 19th century. 2. National Awakening, its origin and stages. Several views of the future shape of literary Macedonian language. 3. Collectors of folklore, reception of their activities in Bohemia and around Europe. 4. The manifestations of romanticism in Macedonian literature – poets of the mid- and late19th century and the reception of their works abroad 5. Cultural emigration – the problem of double- and multinationality and/or double- and multiculturality of authors 6. Life and works of Vojdana Černodrinski (Macedonian Blood Wedding). 7. Macedonian separatism in the 1880s and 1890s, fight for the national independence in the late 19th century. 8. The impact of literature / culture on the national awareness. The Loza magazine and activities of the “lozars”. 9. Krste Petkov Misirkov and his Za makedonckite raboti (On Macedonian Matters). 10. Czech-Macedonian cultural relations in the 19th century.
