Course objectives
Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to understand important trends in development of museums and museology in Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia and will be capable to put them into contemporary cultural, political and intellectual context. Students will evaluate the importance of museum institutions, their collections and individual museum workers in the history of this field. They will be capable to describe the contribution of historical Czech Lands to the evolution of museological thinking in the world.
Syllabus
  • The situation of museums during the First Republic era. The Union of Czechoslovak Museums. Development of regional and specialized museums in 1918-1938. Land Museums during the Interwar Years. Sudeten German Museums in Czechoslovakia and the Greater German Reich. Czech museums at the time of the German Occupation. War events and their impact on Czechoslovak museums. The onset of communism and its impact on Czechoslovak museums (1948-1953). The period of "consolidation", the establishment of the Cabinet of Museum and Regional Studies, and the publishing of a Museum Law. Czechoslovak Museums in the 1960s. Normalization period. Development of Czech museums from 1989 to present day - basic trends.
