Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the specifics of the theory of museology. It is about a closer discussion of the areas of museum selection theory, museum thesauration theory and museum presentation theory. The description of partial parts of theoretical museology is connected with the acquaintance with basic terms - museums, museality, musealization, systematics, thesaurus, evaluation, evaluation, recipient, axiology, ostension, authenticity. The student will also be acquainted with the historical field of development and approaches of basic personalities (J. Neustupný, J. Beneš, Z.Z. Stránský, F. Waidacher, A. Desvallees, P. van Mensch, I. Maroevič, T. Šola).
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to: - to orientate in the history of the development of the theory of the field of museology - know the approaches of basic important museologists both from Bohemia (ZZ Stránský, J. Neustupný, J. Beneš) and from abroad (P. van Mensch, I. Maroevič, Šola, F. Waidacher, T. Šola, A. Desvallees ad.) - to orientate in basic areas of theoretical museology - theory of selection, theory of thesaurus and theory of presentation - to orientate in basic museological terms - understand the theoretical basis of the field in relation to the field of cultural heritage.

  • 1. Systematics of museology. The place of theoretical museology in the systematics of the field. The system of theoretical museology. Museology and museography. 2. The subject of theoretical museology. 3. Important theorists - history. Important theorists - from the second half of the 20th century. 4. Museology as a science. The meaning of the theory of the scientific field 5.Musealization - musealization approach to reality. 6. Selection, thesaurus and presentation within musealization. 7. Selection of potential musealias. Active x passive selection. Museum collection object and musealia. Properties of the musealia. Naturfacts, artifacts, mentefacts.9. "Identities" of the musealia in Peter van Mensch texts (conceptual, factual, current x structural, functional, contextual) 10. Thesaurus and origin of the musealia. Thesaurus formation. Museum shredding. 11. Presentation of musealias, mediation of thesaurus. Ostenze of present. Visual language. Communication channel. 12. Museality. Axiological dimension of musealization. 13. Musealias in the depository and at the exhibition. Exhibit. Utilizing the capacity of potential and actual musealia. 14. Collecting and musealization. Musealization in virtual space. 15. Current and new musealization trends. 16. Terminology as a part of the scientific essence of the field. Concept, term, definition, password. History of museological terminology. 17. ICOM - selected international committees. ICOFOM. History of ICOFOM, basic stages. The contribution of ICOFOM, the meaning of existence. 18. Professional periodicals. ICOFOM Study Series.
