Course objectives
The aim of the lexicology course is to provide a coherent explanation of the basic concepts of lexicology, to give an overview of the lexical variation theories and to discuss word sorting. The student should be able to define basic lexicological concepts and orient in lexicographical production. At the end of this course the student will be able to deduce and explain the basic lexical phenomena and effectively use Dutch dictionary sources.
Learning outcomes
Students will be familiar with the basic lexicological terminology and will be oriented in lexical phenomena and will be oriented in the available Dutch dictionaries.
Syllabus
  • Synchronous Approach - Explanation of categories of lexical semantic description (synonyms, antonyms, polysemy, homonyms, etc.). • Diachronic approach - classification of semantic changes. • Regional, generation, social and stylistic variants. • The practical importance of lexicological research for the quality of lexicography production will be emphasized. • Characteristics of Dutch dictionaries. • Particular attention will be paid to the problem of the word as a unit of description of the language due to its limited phonetic and syntactic autonomy.
