Course objectives
The theme of the course is sociolinguistics and specifically the topic of multilingualism and the position of language in the Netherlands. Students will learn about the phenomenon of multilingualism, the sociolinguistic view of the status of the language in Dutch society and the trends of Dutch development in the European Union and its language policies and the influence of the languages used in the Netherlands on the Dutch language. Students will also learn about the dialects, sociolects and languages of national minorities in the Netherlands. The course is often taught by visiting teachers.
