Course objectives
In this course, students read and discuss six canonised works in Dutch modern literature. Every other week a seminar is organised around one book. Students read this literary work and prepare a reading report (see Study materials), which is used as a basis for discussion about several aspects of the book. Interesting narratological techniques and stylistic peculiarities are examined and ideological, contextual and literary aspects are discussed.
Learning outcomes
Students acquire knowledge about modern Dutch literature and learn to use terms used in narratology and other fields of literary theory. They analyse novels and novellas and learn how to formulate their ideas about literature in Dutch.
