Course objectives

The specificities of the proper names in the German word-stock will be discussed, e.g. the classification (focussing mainly on anthroponyms and toponyms).
A brief comparison with Czech propper names of the corresponding structure should also be given.

Learning outcomes

Upon completition of the course, the students will be able to: distinguish te types of proper names and outline their specificities; characterise the German and Czech anthroponyms including the historical forms; identify and use relevant handbooks, databases and scholarly literature in different fields of onomastics; explain the examples of historical word-stock in traditional proper names.
