Course objectives
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) describes in its self assessment grid the communicative skills: Understanding (Listening and Reading), Speaking (Spoken interaction and Spoken production) and Writing. In this seminar the main focus will be on the training of productive language skills, such as speaking and writing. At the end of the course students are expected to be able to:
- distinguish between the receptive and productive language skills as described in CEFR
- comment on the relevance of Speaking and Writing in language teaching
- understand and explain typologies for speaking and writing activities
- work out and present a draft for a teaching unit according to the typologies
Syllabus
  • During the course a theoretical foundation is provided and discussed but also, a lot of practical information for teaching German as a foreign language will be worked out. The seminar adresses especially to students who consider teaching languages in the future. Firstly, the role of writing in language teaching is drawn attention to and the question is discussed: "Writing - Product or Process?" Also, the role of Speaking in language teaching and the classroom situation as an occasion to talk are analysed. Moreover, a typology of Writing and Speaking activities is determined and teaching units according to the typologies will be drafted, presented and discussed.
