Course objectives
The course describes the main literary and scientific texts written after 1945 about the German problem. The interdisciplinary conception of this Course deals with literary and historiography aspects of this problem, the course supplements all courses about the german literature after 1945.
Learning outcomes
The students will be able to describe the main topics of the discurse about the German problem, to analyse their problems in the contect od the european thought and to interpret the crucial texts.

  • Einführung, Organisation: Deutschheit als Problem. Methodologische Vorüberlegungen. Nichtliterarische Deutschlandreden: H. Lübbe, R. von Weizsäcker, E. Nolte, P. Jenninger, B. Morshäuser. Gemeinsame Interpretation Niederlage oder Befreiung, zwei Modi des nachkriegsdeutschen Seins. Geschichtspolitik: kurzer geschichtlicher Überblick. Vorlesung. Kontroversen in der Geschichtswissenschaft. Vorlesung. Einstieg in die Literatur: Schatten der Gruppe 47. Grenzen der Erinnerungskultur. Zwischen Antisemitismus und Philosemitismus; Vorlesung. G. Grass´ Deutschlandreden; Schreiben nach Auschwitz; Bogen zwischen frühem (Blechtrommel) und spätem Grass (Im Krebsgang). Vorlesung mit gemeinsamer Interpretation. M. Teaching methods
The seminar is based on methods of presentation, analysis and synthesis of knowledge. It also uses collective work, in-class discussions and individual work of students.
Assessment methods
Colloquium requirements: active participation, 1 paper with theses from a chosen lecture including the analysed texts. The Czech translations of the texts can be found in the library, on the second floor. German originals can be provided on request.
