Course objectives
Against the background of two texts (Sontag: 'Krankheit als Metapher', Hitzer: 'Krebs fühlen'), the course provides an introduction to the implementation of the discourse on illness in literary texts: How are physical and mental illnesses represented in German-language texts? What purpose does the motif of illness serve? What role do contemporary concepts of illness play in the texts? Etc.
Learning outcomes
Students
- deal with Susan Sontag's 'Illness as metaphor' and Bettina Hitzer's historical investigation 'Krebs fühlen' to provide a framework in theoretical/historical discourse
- get to know literary realizations of the illness motive.
- can recognize and analyze motives and discourses around illness in literary texts and relate them to each other.
