Course objectives
This seminar offers practical experience with translating. The students prepare translations of selected texts at home and bring them to the seminar. In the seminar translatological problems will be discussed. The aim of the course is not to prepare a "canonical" translation. The main objective of the course is the development of individual translatological skills. At the end of the course the student is able to translate journalistic texts of intermediate difficulty. Moreover the student knows where to find the literature for translators.

  • Selected topics that will be discussed during the seminars: - heuristic problems
  • - literature for translators, vocabulary and style, on-line literature
  • - work with terminology
  • - translation of subtitles
  • - allusions, transcriptions, interferences
  • - grammatical and semantic mistakes
  • - cultural background, translatability

Assessment methods
Active participation in the seminars.
The student works out a translation of a journalistic texts of his/her choice. The length of the text is 3-4 pages. (30 rows/60 key-strokes)
The student hands in the translation before the end of the term.
