Syllabus
  • What if ...? Not knowing and the desire to fabricate is at the beginning of every speculative narrative. A term that connects the most diverse (literary) genres and approaches: Science fiction speculates about the near and distant future. Alternate history wonders what the world would look like if history had developed differently. Dystopias play out the end of the world and whether that might not be a beautiful thing, and with the catchphrase "Anthropocene", the question of what would happen if humans were no longer seen as the center of the world is posed. What Dietmar Dath postulated for science fiction also applies to speculative literature: it is an "Kunst- und Denkmaschine". Narratives shape our thinking and thus the world. Truth is, to quote Ursula K. LeGuin as well, "a matter of imagination": a space of possibility that questions the status quo. The course will use selected German-language texts (and other media) to provide insight into different approaches to speculative literature and which worldviews are reflected in them.
