Course objectives
In “Modern Dutch Literature I” and the follow-up course “Modern Dutch Literature II” an overview is given of Dutch and Flemish literature from 1880 to the present.
In the first course, the period up to the fifties of the twentieth century is discussed. In addition, attention is paid to The Big Three of post-war literature: W.F. Hermans, Gerard Reve and Harry Mulisch. Other important names of post-war literature, such as L.P. Boon, Hugo Claus and Hella S. Haasse, are discussed in part 2, which also deals with literature from the sixties of the twentieth century till the present.
The students are introduced to important movements, authors and works from Dutch literature, which are placed in their cultural-historical context. In preparation for the lectures they read parts of Dějiny nizozemské a vlámské literatury. During class the focus is on specific authors and texts, which are analyzed together.
