Course objectives
This course focuses on the history of Dutch literature from 1880 onwards. The first part (Moderní nizozemská literatura I) dealt with Dutch literature from the “Tachtigers” till the “Vijftigers” and discussed the work of the so-called Big Three, who in Dějiny nizozemské a vlámské literatury are counted among the Big Six. This follow-up course (Moderní nizozemská literatura II) first focuses on the literary work of the other three canonized authors, namely Louis Paul Boon, Hugo Claus and Hella S. Haasse. Subsequently, a picture is given of the literature from the 1960s to the present by means of capita selecta, e.g. postcolonial literature, postmodernism and “multicultural literature”. The aim of this course is to gain insight into post-war developments in Dutch literature, which are placed in a cultural-historical context. Students become acquainted with the work of selected Dutch and Flemish authors and analyze poems, prose fragments and a novel.
Learning outcomes
Students are acquainted with literary developments in the second half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century and can link them to their cultural-historical context. They are familiar with important post-war authors and titles and are able to analyze poems, fragments of prose and a novel.
