Course objectives
The course of lectures concentrates on a summary of problems of an auxiliary linguistic discipline - phonetics. Its aim is to help students to see the importance of phonetics for understanding language, to clarify the meaning of commonly used terms, and to interprete scientific information.

  • I. Phonetics, its position in lingiustic science.
  • II. Spoken and written language, its function and relationships.
  • III. Phonetic transcription, its principles and types.
  • IV. Methods of phonetic analysis of speech.
  • V. The biological basis of speech.
  • VI. Articulation; place and aspect of articulation; articulatory co-ordination and phonetic settings.
  • VII. Vocoid segments. Vocoid articulation.
  • VIII. Consonants; consonants system.
  • IX. Acoustic level of speech.
  • X. The prosodic organisation of speech.
  • XI. The metrical and temporal organisation of speech.
  • XII. Intersegmental articulatory co-ordination.

Assessment methods
The course has a form of lectures where the basic phonetic terms and concepts are explained. The lecture is accompanied by seminars where the theory is demonstrated on conrete languages. The exam is written: the student is expected to make a phonetic desciption of sounds, understand and apply phonetic terms and explain some general thesis of the field.
