Course objectives
At the end of the course students are able to understand current syntactic theories; they grasp problems of dividing competitions between syntax and semantics. Students are oriented in different frameworks which are on the market in current formal linguistics (generative grammar, minimalist programme, optimality theory). Students make deductions based on acquired knowledge which allow them to ponder theoretical problems connected with application of formal methods to material of natural language.

  • Topics: phrase structure, theta roles, case assignment, anaphors, transformations, empty categories, minimalist program, syntax-semantics interface, optimality theory, constructional grammar.
