Course objectives

The course is primarily designed for students who either have not taken a course in phonetics or went thru an introduction in their first year of study at the University. The course focuses on new developments in the field and helps the students to increase their knowledge of terminology and its application to linguistic research.

• III. Phonetic transcription, ist principles and types.
• IV. Metods of phonetic analysis of speech.
• V. The biological basis of speech.
• VI. Articulation; place and aspect of articulation; articulatory co-ordination and phonetic settings.
• VII. Vocoid segments. Vocoid articulation.
• VIII. Consonants; consonants system.
• IX. Acoustic level of speech.
• X. The prosodic organisation of speech.
• XI. The metrical and temporal organisation of speech.
• XII. Intersegmental articulatory co-ordination.

Assessment methods

The teaching is done by self-study with the possibility of attending lectures for regular students followed by one-to-one tutoring. The student will submit abstracts from secondary literature related to his/her dissertation to the teacher at least a week before the exam. During the examination the students are expected to show their ability to apply a phonetic and phonological analysis to a text while demonstrating their knowledge of terminolog ; in the discussion then thee student will comment on the findings mentioned in the abstracts and their possible application to his/her study (dissertation).
