Course objectives
The course focuses on key topics in the history of education and pedagogy. Students will learn the basic terminology and methodology of historical research. They will have an overview of school management issues, didactics and its changes in history. The emphasis is on the history of education in our territory in the 20th century, including education and schools under totalitarian regimes. Students will learn about issues of teacher education, school reforms and legislation in modern history. They will have the opportunity to learn about the results of research projects undertaken by teachers and get a glimpse into the "workshop" of a historian of contemporary history. The course is designed for anyone who wants to understand historical contexts and their impact on contemporary education.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, a student will be able to:
describe and explain various educational systems and educational institutions from Middle Ages to modern era;
apply basic terminology and definitions of history of education;
design a research project in history of education;
describe and explain the history of education in Czechoslovakia in the 20th century, education in totalitarian regimes atc.;
describe, analyze and explain works of important philosophers and thinkers (Plato, Aristotle, Komenský, Rousseau, Herbart, Dewey etc.);
describe and explain work and thinking of Czech scholars – education scientists, who contributed to establishing of Czech modern educational science.

  • 1. Foundations of the study of the history of pedagogy and education. Introduction to historical-pedagogical research.
  • 2. Theory of education and education, education and education in antics.
  • 3. Education, major school reforms, school legislation, and teacher education from the 18th century to the mid-20th century.
  • 4. Czech (Czechoslovak) education in the second half of the 20th century (primary, secondary and higher education). School policy and teacher education. Changes in education after 1989.
  • 5. The work and basic ideas of J. A. Comenius. Comenius' theory of education and the concept of education and learning. Issues of Comenius' legacy.
  • 6. Theories of education and learning from the 16th/17th century to the early 20th century. The most important representatives of various schools of thought and approaches to the theory of education and learning.

Assessment methods
Written examination aimed at testing the student’s insight into the history of education/schooling, main theories, concepts, and methodologies of the discipline, or in the work of the main representatives of the scholarly discourse, and at checking the student’s ability to connect relevant facts into logical relations. A condition for taking the examination is successfully completing two control points ('tests') during the semester.
