Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with basic topics in the field of informatics and information and communication technologies. Students will also acquire the practical skills necessary to understand the significance and application of digital technologies in the educational process. The course introduces the topic of ICT in a broad context, with a very strong emphasis on the application level as far as the application of ICT in education is concerned.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- explain the principles of operation of software applications, computer networks and the Internet;
- describe the basics of algorithms;
- identify and use markup languages and document styles;
- describe and explain the principles of electronic documents and their (online) creation, apply these principles in practice;
- create simple database queries;
- visualize data effectively;
- describe and explain the differences between basic image, audio and video formats;
- deal with the pitfalls of online communication;
- make provisions for secure working with electronic data for oneself and others.

  • Elementary algorithms and principles of software applications
  • Computer networks, communication protocols and the basics of the Internet
  • Online communication, communication protocols, pedagogical aspects of online communication in group learning
  • Modern electronic documents, shared document creation
  • Markup languages, styles, websites
  • Multimedia and their significance for education, formats, editing
  • Creative work with data, data visualization, computer graphics
  • Mass manipulation of data, databases, introduction to querying
  • Computer safety and security, privacy issues on the Internet

Assessment methods
Writing of a seminar paper and its defence (40% of the grade), online exam (60% of the grade). A minimum of 70% is required to successfully complete the course.
