Course objectives

Students will become familiar with the history of Czech philosophical thought and Czech culture their major figures, they will be able to interpret historical philosophical texts and situate them in historical context, as well as in the context of European and World philosophy.

Syllabus

• The charakter of Czech philosophical trought.
• Czech reformation (Tomáš Štítný, Huss´ predecessors, John Huss, Petr Chelčický).
• Humanism (Unity of the brethren, John Blahoslav, J. A. Comenius); philosophy after 1620.
• Enlightenment (Dobrovský, Procházka, Bolzano, Palacký).
• Hegelianism (Purkyně, Klácel, Bratránek, Štorch, Hanuš, A. Smetana).
• Herbartism (Lindner, Dastich, Durdík, Hostinský, Zába).
• T. G. Masaryk.
• Positivism (Krejčí, Čáda, Drtina, Tvrdý, Král, Zbořil).
• Idealism (Mareš, Rádl, Klíma, Pelikán, Vorovka, Hoppe, Trnka).
• Religious philosophy (Kratochvil, Habáň, Pecka, Kozák, Hromádka).

Teaching methods

Instruction in the form of lectures, presentations and seminars.

Assessment methods

The attendance of lectures and activity in seminars.
Elaboration of one paper from the assigned literature.
A written exam from the history of Czech philosophy from the Middle Ages till 1968.
The written exam (at least 70 % success rate) immediately precedes the oral exam.
