Course objectives

The aim of the course is to acquaint students with selected philosophical approaches, topics and problems that may be relevant to their partial research focus. Emphasis is placed on the general methodological and ethical requirements of research in the humanities.

Learning outcomes

Students will learn the typical procedures of philosophical reasoning and its limits. At the end of this course students will by acquainted with basic framework, which enables them to identify the general methodological and critical qualities of academic writing, regardless of its topic. Students' sensitivity to such phenomena has a direct effect on the production and evaluation of their own texts, typically dissertations.

Syllabus

• 1) Science and pseudoscience, philosophy and pseudophilosophy
  Based on several examples from the real operation of science, the lecture presents possible pitfalls of creating a professional text, comments on the main principles and methods of its construction and points out the main parameters of the creation of scientific theories.
  
  2) Doubt as a method
  The aim of the lecture is to introduce skepticism as one of the traditional ways of philosophical thinking. In short: what is philosophical skepticism, what are the reasons for the emergence of a skeptical attitude, what are the principles, forms and possible consequences of philosophical skepticism. The lecture is divided into two parts: a) the history of the concept of skepticism and the line of development of skeptical thinking from antiquity to the present, b) skeptical thinking in action - Pyrrhonic and interimistic skepticism in the practical philosophy of Odo Marquard.
  
  3) How to argue ideally
  The lecture is focused on the evaluation of arguments. We will show the ideal form of rational persuasion, sequence, rules and assumptions of acceptable persuasive practices. And their disorders.
  
  4) How to approach knowledge of the past
  The lecture deals with the methodology of historical research in the field of history of philosophy, history of humanities, history of science, intellectual history, history of concepts and history of ideas. It defines the basic approaches (internalism / externalism; synchronous / diachronic approach) and draws attention to the dangers and pitfalls in the study of knowledge of the past (anachronisms, actualisations, whiggism).
  
  5) Research ethics
  The aim of the lecture is to introduce the fundamentals of research ethics relevant for research in the humanities and social sciences and outline the concept of research integrity to the students.
