Course objectives
The goal of the course is to introduce students to propositional and predicate logic and the basics of critical thinking.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students should:
understand key notions of propositional and predicate logic;
translate statements from ordinary language into the language of propositional and predicate logic;
use the logical sqare to transform statements and Venn diagrams and truth-table method to assess the validity of arguments;
identify the key informal arguments and logical fallacies.
Syllabus
  • 1. The concepts of argument, entailment, logic;
  • 2. The elementary semiotic concepts used in logic;
  • 3. The syntax of propositional logic, the semantics of propositional logic - the truth table method;
  • 4. Tautology and contradiciton;
  • 7. Translation of natural language sentences into predicate logic;
  • 8. Logical square;
  • 9. Categorical syllogism, Venn diagrams.
  • 10. Basic informal arguments and logical fallacies.
