Course objectives
The goal of the course is to introduce students to informal logic and the basics of critical thinking.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students will be able to:
understand key notions of informal logic,
identify argumentative forms of discourse,
identify and assess basic types of deductive and inductive arguments,
identify logical fallacies.
Syllabus
  • 1. The concepts of logic, informal logic and the basic concepts of logic and critical thinking (argument, premise, conclusion, justification, validity, soundness, etc.)
  • 2. Identification of argumentative forms of discourse and their distinctive features;
  • 3. Deduction, induction and typical arguments.
  • 4. Argument diagrams, identification of implicit assumptions.
  • 5. Assessment of key deductive and inductive arguments.
  • 6. Logical fallacies.

Written exam - approx. 8 questions - min. pass level 60 percent. Compulsory attendance.
