Course objectives
This two-term course is designed to introduce students to the study of the relationships between literary and cinematic forms. We will compare the novel/short story and film as narrative arts while examining the dialogue that ensues when film interprets literature. The theory and practice of film adaptation will be studied in relation to some famous Polish novels and their cinematic versions. Students will be able to explore issues pertaining to each medium as well as larger questions relating to adaptation, translation, and interpretation, to use basic terms from the field of the theory of adaptation.
Syllabus
  • Seminars will focus on these literary and film works: Dziewczęta z Nowolipek (Barbara Sass, 1985, based on novel by Pola Gojawiczyńska), Weiser (Wojciech Marczewski, 2000, based on novel by Paweł Huelle), Austeria (Jerzy Kawalerowicz, 1982, based on novel by Julian Stryjkowski), Nienasycenie (Wiktor Grodecki, 2003, based on novel by Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz), Kronika wypadków miłosnych (Andrzej Wajda, 1985, based on novel by Tadeusz Konwicki), Dolina Issy (Tadeusz Konwicki, 1982, based on novel by Czesław Miłosz).
