Prerequisites
Student knows recent syntactic theories about sentence structure and basic terminology. Recommended presupposition – the successful completion of one of mentioned seminars: CJA010 Současný český jazyk - syntax, CJBB172 Introduction to Czech syntax, OJ407 Teorie syntaxe

Course objectives
The goal of the course is to provide the students with state-of-the-art in formal description of syntax with regard to its computational processing and automatic syntactic analysis (parsing). Students will be able to understand and use formal methods for description of syntax together with related methods and algorithms for syntactic analysis. Next, they will have an opportunity to work with the syntactically annotated text corpora or with particular syntactic parsers which are designed for Czech language.
Learning outcomes
After completion of this course a student will be able:
- to describe the process of syntactic analysis,
- to understand differences between dependency and component approach,
- to work with the syntactically annotated text corpora,
- to understand formal methods for description of syntax,
- to work with specific syntactit parsers at basic level.
Syllabus
  • 1. Historical overview, motivation, sentence and its surface structure.
  • 2. Shallow and deep analysis.
  • 3. Dependency and phrasal syntax.
  • 4. Advanced grammatical formalisms (HPSG, LFG, TAG, CCG).
  • 5. Syntactically annotated text corpora (treebanks).
  • 6. Evaluation methods for parsing quality.
  • 7. Applications of parsing.

To participate actively and regularly in the seminars (max. 2 absence), writen test (the test is successful if you reach at least 66 % of points), fulfil tasks.
