Course objectives
The goal of this course is to make the students acquainted with the authors of contemporary Portuguese literature with respect to the concept of postmodernism. With a few exceptions, we will analyze texts published during 1980s and 1990s which will give us opportunity to consider specific aspects of the literature of that period: psychologism, phantasy, interpersonal relationships and love, woman and her forms, metafiction, play with genres, politics and literature, fiction and history, crime fiction, end of traditional epics etc. Parallel reading of theoretical texts (Matei Calinescu, José G. Merquior, Wolfgang Welsch, Suzi Gabliková, Lubomír Doležel, Květoslav Chvatík, Umberto Eco, Petr A. Bílek a Jiří Trávníček) will be a basis for analysis and interpretation of the discussed works.;
At the end of this course students should be able to:
1) characterize literary text using the selected methodology;.
2) explain and enumerate the themes of contemporary literature;.
3) articulate their ideas on the basis of their own reader’s experience..
