Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to outline and explain the main theories concerning the problem of the city in literature. Students should also be able to describe and interpret some particular images of city in the Portuguese fiction.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course student will be able:
- to describe some specific elements of the city writing in the Portuguese literature
- to describe, analyze and interpret chosen titles written by Portuguese authors
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to the theoretical approach. 2. Description and interpretation of the images of city in the Portuguese fiction. Focus on historical and social context, as well as on comparative approach. In the year of 2015, our attention will be paid on various images of Lisbon. a) history of Lisbon a) a dandy and flaneur city (Eca de Queirós, Fialho de Almeida: Lisboa galante, J. César Machado) b) a decadent city (Fialho de Almeida: A cidade do vício, O país das uvas, Contos, Lobo Antunes: Memória de Elefante) c) a dead city (R. Brandao: crónicas - Miséria em Lisboa, A. Abelaira: Enseada amena) d) a popular city (I. Lisboa: Esta cidade!, Almada Negreiros: A engomadeira, J. Rodrigues Miguéis: Léah e outras histórias, Passos confusos, J.
