Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to: understand and explain the most important works devoted to the problems of artistic translation in our country and abroad, especially in Slovakia, Russia, Poland, Hungary and in the West; study fundamental works written by Jiří Levý, E. G. Etkind, as well as works, which are regularly published in Prague, Hradec Králové, Brno and in other places of the Czech Republic and abroad; understand and explain the problems of translation in relation to the historical development of this discipline;understand the relationship between the methodology of translation and the contemporary aesthetic code, that largely arises out from the whole sign system of the present historical situation; explain the contemporary condition of this problematic; determine the criteria typical for the dividing line between fiction and nonfictio; applicate theoretical knowledge in the material with the most evident dividing line, such as genres of literary essay, epistolary literature or travel literature which have been chosen intentionally, because they let us observe the connection between fiction and nonfiction problematic; can be able to find this dividing line between different stylistic levels in practice.

Active work during seminars; seminar work on the history of translation; individual translation of a literary essay, an epistolary text or an extract from travel literature.

Final oral colloquium to control knowledge and experience in the field of translation.
