Course objectives
The content of the seminar is an introduction to various genres of journalistic texts, analysis of selected texts, translation of texts into Czech and Greek. Emphasis will be placed on the development of linguistic skills, vocabulary and stylistic competence, as well as the ability to accurately read the text, to affect the layers of meaning and language, to identify figurative terms, phrases, idioms, allusions. Students will propose and consult various options for interpreting and translating texts. The translation practice will include developing orientation in Greek realities and working with translation tools (memory databases, etc.). We will translate texts of different genres and focus, essays, informative, advertising, etc. Translation of short videos - advertising, popularization video, etc. will also be included. Students will also engage in peer evaluation of their own translations.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course:
- the student will be familiar with journalistic texts of various genres;
- will be familiar with the phases of translation practice (accurate reading, interpretation, translation);
- will be able to choose appropriate lexical and stylistic devices for translation;
- will be able to work with translation tools (memory databases, online dictionaries, etc.);
- the student will be able to reflect Greek realities (cultural, social, political, etc.) in the translation;
- will be able to evaluate the level of the translatied text;

  • 2. Greek and Czech journalistic style (expressiveness, use of figurative names, etc.);
  • 3. Translation tools;
  • 4.-5. Translation of journalistic texts: articles on various topics (passive translation, peer review);
  • 6.-7. Translation of journalistic texts: articles on various topics (active translation, peer review);
  • 8. Translation of journalistic texts: reportage (passive translation);
  • 9. Translation of journalistic texts: reportage (active translation);
  • 10.-11. Translation of advertising texts (passive and active translation);
  • 12.-14. Translation of videos (advertising, popularisation, etc.);

Teaching methods
The lectures will take the form of theoretical preparation, discussion and evaluation of the translations. Short translations of journalistic texts will be assigned as homework.
Assessment methods
Active participation, regular submission of assignments, final test.
