Course objectives
The seminar focuses on the interpretation of a literary text and its translation from Greek into Czech. The students will practice critical reading and interpretation skills, stylistic analysis of the original, and will explore various translation options and strategies with a focus on functional equivalents in the target language. Texts of different literary types and genres will be selected for translation: fairy tale, short story, dramatic text, poem in bound and free verse, etc. At the same time, knowledge from the field of translation theory and literary history will be applied and expanded, and the necessary bibliographical research will be included.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course the student will:
- be familiar with the basic principles of translation of artistic texts and the specifics of literary translation and be able to apply the acquired knowledge in practice;
- be able to analyse the stylistic level of the original and the means used and choose adequate equivalents in the target language;
- will be able to identify and reflect the specifics of different literary types and genres in translation.
Syllabus
  • 1. Theoretical problems of translation of literary text
  • 2. Specifics of translation of different literary genres
  • 3.-4. Translation of fairy tales (specifics: formulae, characters, etc.), discussion of translations, evaluation
  • 5.-7. Translation of a short story (cultural context, allusions), discussion of translations, evaluation
  • 8.-9. Translation of a sample of a dramatic text, discussion, evaluation
  • 10.-11. Translation of bound poetry (metre, rhyme), discussion, evaluation
  • 12.-13. Translation of free verse, discussion, evaluation
  • 14. Final proofreading and editing of translations
