Course objectives
In the first, theoretical, part, the seminar will focus on the basic concepts, narrative techniques and the main characteristic features of comics, always taking into account the specific requirements for the translation of this genre. The main emphasis will be on the technical (linking verbal and visual components), cultural (Greek vs. Czech realities) and linguistic (lexical and stylistic aspects) features. This section will also be complemented by a brief overview of the development of the Greek and Czech comics scene. In the empirical part, the findings will be applied to the translation of a selected Greek comic. Another part of the seminar will be devoted to the problems of subtitling, technical and linguistic aspects and principles of subtitling in the Czech environment. The theoritical knowledge will again be tested on the translation of a shorter film (e.g. animated film, series episode).
Learning outcomes
After the course completion, student will:
- be able to characterize the genre of comics and graphic novels;
- be able to define the translation specifics of this genre;
- be familiar with the principles of subtitling and its specifics in the Czech environment;
- be able to choose adequate translation strategies for the selected media, justify them and apply them.

  • 2. Technical, linguistic and cultural aspects of translating comics;
  • 3. Greek and Czech comics scene;
  • 4.-7. Translation of a selected work (homework) and discussion of the translation;
  • 8. Principles of subtitling, technical and linguistic aspects, specifics of Czech subtitles;
  • 9.-12. Creating subtitles for a selected audiovisual work;
  • 13. Final proofreading and editing of subtitles;
  • 14. Projection and discussion
