- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the field of legal translation and with the specifics of Czech-Greek and Greek-Czech translation of legal texts. Students will be introduced to the conditions of appointment and practice of the profession of court translator and to the basics of the Czech and Greek legal systems and their differences (in relation to translation practice). They will also learn the basics of translating legal and professional texts and become acquainted with the translation tools. The main part of the seminar will be devoted to practising the translation of legal texts (contracts, diplomas, etc.) in the form of passive and active translation. Some attention will also be paid to other disciplines.
- Learning outcomes
- Upon completion of the course the students will be able to:
- orient themselves in the legal regulations of court translation and interpreting in the Czech Republic;
- actively search for reference materials;
- use translation tools and corpora for legal and professional translation;
- analyse the specifics of the source text;
- critically assess the suitability of different translation options;
- translate legal texts with respect to the differences in legal systems;
- actively use language devices of professional style in Greek and Czech. - Syllabus
- 1. Specifics of the professional style;
- 2. Conditions for the appointment of a court translator in the Czech Republic; performance of the activity of a court translator in the Czech Republic;
- 3. Translation tools and corpora for legal and professional translation;
- 4. Basic differences between the Czech and Greek legal systems;
- 5. Terminological resources;
- 6.-11. Training in translation of various types of legal texts (contracts, diplomas, court decisions etc.) - passive and active translation, discussion and evaluation;
- 12.-13. Translation of other professional texts (medical reports etc.);
- 14. Final evaluation of the seminar and discussion;
