Course objectives
The purpose of this lecture is to get students acquianted with the work at a help-line. The containt will mainly be based on practical experience and enriched by my own pracicle connaicance with casuistics.
Syllabus
  • Topics: 1. The basic introduction into th work at a help-line. What sort of clients searches for help at a help-line and how important is it for them. The classification of phone-calls. 2. The topic of mental crisis. Situations that cause men to be in a trouble. Behavior in crisis. Means of handling with crisis. 3. Use of language in a specific communicative situations. Using of paraverbal signals. Dealing with difficult moments in conversation (weep, silence, aggresion). Working with emotions. Application in model situations. 4. Leading of a help-line. Ethical issues in a help-line. Burn-out syndrome prevention. 5. The specifica of children and adults who use the help-line. Work with callers`s demands. Art of getting information. Referring clients to more appropriate institutions. 6. Peculiarities of "TCI" children and adolescents. Bullying, harrasing, school problems. Problems in relationships. Sexual topics in calls. Problems in talking to family. Drugs and their abuse by children and adolescents. The child abuse and neglect syndrome. Clients with suicidal tendencies. Selected questions about child and adolescent psychopathology. Brief outline of work with "borderline" clients. 7. Test(ing) calls and managing with them. Work at help-line headquarter. 8. Speaking to adults. Partner-relationship, typical situations and stories of callers in such milieu. 9. Casuistic analyses. 10. Practical training in leading dialogue.
