Course objectives
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the basic issues and concepts in Digital Humanities, the possibilities of using information technology and innovative research tools in various auxiliary sciences of history and archival science. The course focuses on five main topics, examples of best practices and also the independent work of students with selected tools in the final project.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, students will be introduced to the approaches of Digital Humanities and will learn to use the methods and tools of digital humanities in practice. They will be able to work independently with foreign language literature, as well as browse open access resources.

  • Introduction to Digital Humanities: Basic Concepts and Pillars of Digital Humanities, Links to Auxiliary Historical Sciences
  • 1. Digitization and metadata: Digitization in memory institutions, Metadata and metadata standards
  • 2. Working with image data: Image data, IIIF, OCR and HTR
  • 3. Text analysis and markup in XML: Text analysis and Data mining, Introduction to XML, TEI P5
  • 4. Spatial data and networking: Spatial and temporal data, Network analysis of relationships
  • 5. Visualization and presentation of results: Data visualization and 3D modelling, Digital libraries and archives Glossary, Overview of international projects

Teaching methods
Lectures, seminars. The teaching takes the form of interactive presentations and practical exercises using the e-learning system (Elf).
Assessment methods
Conditions for the successful completion of the course are participation at the lessons (at least 70%), completion of 5 ongoing tasks in the Elf and devising a project from one of the five main topics.
