Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce students to professional terminology in the fields of auxiliary historical sciences and archivial science in German. The course deals specifically with the most important auxiliary sciences: paleography (including codicology and filigranology), historical chronology and diplomatics.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, students will be able to:
- be familiar with the professional vocabulary of individual auxiliary historical sciences in German and able to actively use it;
- read a specialized text from the relevant auxiliary historical science (at the level of university textbooks, standard manuals and even scholarly studies);
- compose a shorter professional text in German (at the level of a summary or an academic paper).
Syllabus
  • 1. Overview of auxiliary historical sciences: the subjects of study, differences in the German and Czech language environments.
  • 2. Paleography: a definition of the field and its development with an emphasis on German-speaking countries; terminology of script types and describing scripts in German.
  • 3. Paleography: reading German texts on the history of writing in antiquity, and the Early and High Middle Ages; examples and practice of describing the period script in German.
  • 4. Paleography: reading German texts on the history of writing in the Gothic period; examples and practice of describing the period script in German.
  • 5. Paleography: reading German texts on the history of writing in the Modern age; examples and practice of describing the period script in German.
  • 6. Codicology: definition of the field and its development with an emphasis on German-speaking countries, terminology of external and internal features of a codex. 7. Codicology: Examples and practice of manuscript description in German; reading German texts on the history of medieval book culture.
  • 8. Filigranology: definition of the field; reading texts on the history of paper; filigree terminology; demonstrations and practice of describing filigree in German.
  • 9. Historical chronology: definition of the field; German terminology of the medieval calendar; demonstrations and practice of period dating and its analysis in German.
  • 10. Diplomatics: definition of the field and its development with an emphasis on German-speaking countries; terminology of external and internal features of official charters in German.
  • 11. Diplomatics: reading German texts on medieval papal and royal diplomatic materials; examples and practice of describing medieval papal documents.
  • 12. Diplomatics: reading German texts on medieval private diplomatic materials; examples and practice of describing medieval private literature.

Teaching methods
Vocabulary self-study, reading selected textbooks and handbook texts at home, preparation of answers to questions on these texts.
- Group reading of specialized texts during the seminar, basic discussions on them in German.
- Group practice of describing scripts, manuscripts, filigrees, charters or other diplomatic relics, analysing historical dating in German.
Assessment methods
The conditions for awarding credit for the course are active participation in seminars, homework (reading texts, answering questions, writing short excerpts from specialized texts) and a test of knowledge of professional terminology and the ability to work with a specialized text.
