Course objectives
At the end of the course, students will be able to: read and translate an unknown Classical Latin text of average difficulty or a simple medieval Latin text into Czech with the assistance of a dictionary; comprehend basic odd features of the graphical form of medieval Latin.
Syllabus
  • 1. introduction to translation – selection of a dictionary, interdisciplinary aspects and the purpose of the translation; knowledge of Latin editions 2. revision and practical application of the topics explained during the three previous Latin courses – translation of shorter coherent texts written in Classical and medieval Latin; the texts are excerpted from these works: Caesar – Commentarii de Bello Gallico; Cicero – Tusculanae disputationes; Biblia sacra iuxta vulgatam versionem; Hus´s letters; Petrus Alphonsi – Disciplina clericalis.

Teaching methods
One 1.5 hours class per week consisting of a lecture and a seminar.
Assessment methods
Credit requirements: regular class attendance (75%); oral colloquium, in which the ability to translate a shorter Latin text with the assistance of a dictionary and explanation of grammatical phenomena contained in the text will be examined.
