Course objectives
The series of seminars is focused on the practice of editing work in the publishing of Bohemian diplomatic material of the Přemyslid era within the critical edition Český diplomatář . The main focus of attention will be analysing individual types of preserved charters (from the perspective of their diplomatic aspects and in terms of their legal content) and determining which editorial techniques are appropriate for the publication of the material. Emphasis will be placed on the textual tradition of published charters and on the impact of its critical evaluation on the editorial technique selected.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- improve their knowledge of editions of Czech diplomatic material acquired during the Batchelor’s course;
- be familiar with specific examples of the editorial techniques of the Český diplomatář, i.e., the most rigorous edition of all;
- use the study of the textual tradition of official sources to detect diplomatic deperdits and falsifications;
- use the acquired editorial skills in their future work in related fields: identifying the localities of sources, identifying persons mentioned in sources, translating diplomatic sources into Czech, etc..
