Course objectives
The aim of the multidisciplinary course is to acquaint students with the basic methodological approaches in working with historical sources and their strengths (and weaknesses) in the critical interpretation of these sources. This will not only include the methodology of auxiliary historical sciences in its diachronic development (with an emphasis on the period from the 17th to the 19th century), but will also take into consideration influences from related disciplines, which are primarily philology, sociology, art history, computer science, archaeology and psychology.
Learning outcomes
Students will learn the main currents of historical-methodological thought, especially from the early modern period to the second half of the 20th century. They will be able to classify and characterize the leading exponents of historical thought of the period and critically analyse the genesis of their theories and place them in the overall framework of development. In addition to this specialist knowledge, the course will focus on the further development of oral argumentation skills, based on extensive discussions in seminars and on the study of authentic historical sources, critical publications and other specialist texts.
Syllabus
  • In the seminar group, which will be composed of students of doctoral programmes in historical and related sciences, there will be discussion on the fundamental texts (sources, publications, and works of individual historians) that shaped Czech and Western European historiography, basically in chronological order from the Baroque through the Enlightenment up to the second half of the 20th century.
Literature
  • Literatura je zadána individuálně podle probírané problematiky.
  • The literature is assigned individually according to the issues under discussion.
Teaching methods
Analysis of historical sources and texts, active discussions, and short oral presentations in seminars.
Assessment methods
Credit is awarded to the student on the basis of active participation in seminars and a final discussion on a pre-determined topic (methodological issues relating to the student’s own work with sources and secondary literature).
Language of instruction
Czech
