Course objectives
The course provides students with normative grammar of the Attic Greek dialect of the Classical period. The focus is placed on practice of grammatical phenomena, particularly morphological, existing in Modern Greek. The aim of the course is to present the old phase of Greek language to students and thus contribute to their better understanding of the development of Modern Greek language.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students should be able to: reproduce nominal and verbal paradigms studied within the course (vide syllabus of the course); explain grammatical rules studied within the course; recognize grammatical categories of the morphological forms studied within the course; understand the differences between ancient Greek and modern Greek;
to know the main stages of development in Greece;
have an overview of the Grammar system of ancient Greek;
to understand Modern Greek language phenomena from ancient Greek and to explain their development;
to know the most important spelling changes;
Syllabus
  • 1. The alphabet, pronunciation of Greek, diacritical and punctuation marks.
  • 2. Nouns: grammatical structure, o- and a-stems.
  • 3. Nouns: a-stems. Adjectivs.
  • 4. Verbs: grammatical structure, present tense.
  • 5. Present mediopassive participle, participle constructions.
  • 6. Asigmatic aorist, augment.
  • 7. Sigmatic aorist.
  • 8. Future.
  • 9. Pronouns.
  • 10. Third declension: stop, liquid, nasal stems.
  • 11. Adjectivs: comparative and superlative degrees.
  • 12. Aorist passive.

Teaching methods
Interpretation of grammar, practicing (grammar exercises, simple translations), searching for the phenomena in the Modern Greek texts. An e-learning course with study materials (comparative tables of grammatical phenomena) and grammar practice tests is available.
Assessment methods
Students’ active attendance is necessary. Credits are obtained by passing a written test at the end of the period. The test consists of a translation of simple sentences from Greek into Czech, identifying verb forms exercise and a translation of verb forms (from and into Czech), searching for phenomena in the New-Greek text.
