Course objectives
The main aim of the course is to acquire a deep knowledge of the history of Modern Greek language in historical and cultural-political context and to understand the causes of diglossia. The students acquire a systematic knowledge of normative grammar of Katharevousa and its practical use for reading and language analysis of period texts (Korais, Kodrikas, Kommitas, Gregorius V, Roidis, Papadiamantis, etc.). At the end of the course students will understand the Greek language question and the term Katharevousa. They will be able to describe functional differentiation of Greek language – emergence and existence of specific language norms in the development of Greek language from Antiquity up to the present. They will be familiar with grammar of Katharevousa and they will use this skill in reading and translating of period texts.

  • 1.-4. Development of Greek diglossia from Antiquity up to the present. 5.-7. Emergence and development of the Greek language question (glossiko zitima). 8.-10. Normative grammar system of Katharevousa. 11.-13. Language analysis of chosen texts.

Teaching methods
Planned learning activities and teaching methods consist of lectures, reading and analysis of Greek texts written in Katharevousa.
Assessment methods
The course ends with an oral exam (duration: 30 min). In order to be awarded credits, students have to demonstrate the knowledge of the history and grammar of Katharevousa and the ability of correct interpretation and translation of a selected part of the Greek text.
