Prerequisites
The knowledge of Russian language is required. The seminar will be in Czech, but movies’ fragments will be in Russian without translation or with English subtitles.

Course objectives
The aim of the seminar is to acquaint students with the key movies of Russian and Soviet cinematography. At the end of the course students will have knowledge of Russian cinematography and will be able to characterise single movies.
Learning outcomes
After finishing the course, the student will be able
- to characterise single movies of Russian and Soviet cinematography from different points of view (mainly from culturological and historical)
- to have a knowledge of the most significant Russian and Soviet movies
- to put the movies to the social, historical and artistic context.
Syllabus
  • 1) Introduction to the seminar, conditions of the course and of the successful finishing. The beginning of Russian and Soviet film. Dziga Vertov – Man with a Movie Camera; Sergei Eisenstein Battleship Potemkin, Ivan The Terrible. Showing movies fragments and commenting on them, discussion.
  • 2) 30s. Vasilyev brothers – Chapaev. Grigori Aleksandrov – Volga-Volga, Circus, Jolly Fellows. Showing movies fragments and commenting on them, discussion.
  • 3) 40s. Great Patriotic War and cinematography. Ivan Pyryov. Six P.M. Showing movie fragments and commenting on them, discussion.
  • 4) 50s. Mikhail Kalatozov – The Cranes Are Flying. Showing movie fragments and commenting on them, discussion.
  • 5) 60s. Marlen Khutsiev – July Rain/I am twenty; Gennadi Poloka – The Republic of ShKID; Kira Muratova – Brief Encounters. Showing movies fragments and commenting on them, discussion.
  • 6) 70s. Ilya Averbakh – Chuzhie pisma/Monologue; Andrej Tarkovsky – Solaris; Nikita Mikhalkov – An Unfinished piece for mechanical piano. Showing movies fragments and commenting on them, discussion.

Projection of the whole movies or just fragments, commentary. Discussion with students.

Oral examination on one of the viewed movies (discussed during seminars or of the student’s choice). Regular attendance
