Course objectives
The aim of this four-semester course of literary Chinese (wenyan) is to offer a systematic introduction into the study of language of Chinese classsical texts and to introduce a basic reading of classics, including the formal and content interpretation of selected texts, so that the students can continue independent readings of commented texts with the help of dictionary and reference literature. Part I is devoted to the explanation of features differentiating wenyan from modern spoken as well as written Chinese (baihua, putonghua). Towards the end, students are introduced priniciples of contemporary sound realization of old Chinese texts. Attention is paid to the emergence and historical development of Chinese writing with the emphasis on basic semiotic principles that played role in the emergence of Chinese characters. The course mentiones basic styles of Chinese writing and caligraphy (archaic style, the style of Great and Small Seals, li-shu, kai-shu, cao-shu, xing-shu). Students read and write shorter sequences of traditional Chinese characters. Some time is devoted also to syntactic analysis of non-sentence and sentence parts and grammatical constructions.
