Course objectives
The course focuses on the essential historical context of the institutionalization of con-temporary Muslim communities in Western Europe (for example Germany, Austria, France, etc..) in the second half of the 20th century. The basic course topics are democracy and human rights from the perspective of Islam, women in Muslim communities in Western Europe, building mosques and other religious infrastructure, issues of teaching Islam in schools, the relationship with other faiths, etc. Students will become familiar with current literature and analyzes information received by the media. These information sources (together with reports of students of the course) will become the basis for subsequent discussion.
At the end of the course students will: have an enhanced knowledge of elementary facts abou islam in Western Europe;
be familiar with the institutionalization of the Muslim communities of Western Europe in the second half of the 20th century;
be able to critically interpret text and audio-visual presentation of the Muslim communi-ties;
be able to independently analyze issues and other topics that appear in the integration of Muslims into Western societies;

  • Syllabus 0. Introduction to the course; 1. The arrival and establishment of Muslims in Western Europe; 2. Will be Germany a "New Turkey"? 3. The historical context of the institutionalization of Islam in Austria; 4. Islam in Switzerland: conflict or dialogue?; 5. Will be France a "New Algeria"?; 6. Democracy and human rights from the perspective of Islam; 7. Women in Islam - the influence of traditional religious right on the present life; 8. Building of mosques and other religious infrastructure; 9. The question of teaching Islam in state schools; 10. Interfaith dialogue and relationship with other faiths; 11. Terrorism and Islamophobia: themes only for the media?; 12. Final discussion of course topics and evaluation.

Teaching methods
The course consists of lectures and seminars. Students will present papers which will form the basis for active discussion among participants. The homework is to draw up a paper.
