- Course objectives
- The course offers a survey of religious beliefs and practices in prehistoric and ancient Europe (except of Crete, Greece, and Rome). The first part is focused on theoretical background of prehistoric and ancient religiosity (a development toward polytheism). The second part deals with particular periods of prehistoric and ancient European religions - from the Paleolithic beginnings to the protohistorical period (religions of the Celts, Thracians, Scythians, Germans and Slavs).
- Syllabus
- (0) Introduction to the course. (1) Basic terminology of prehistoric religiosity. (2) Religion in the Paleolithic Europe. (3) Religious ideas of the Neolithic farmers. (4) The Eneolithic prototeism. (5) The Bronze age Polyteism. (6) The developed polyteism in the Hallstatt period. (7) Religious particularism of the ancient Celts. (8) Religion of the Thracians, Scythians, and Sarmats. (9) The old Etruscan religion. (10) The old Germanic religion. (11) The old Slavonic religion. (12) Final test.
