Course objectives
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with fundamental issues of doing qualitative research. The course deals with the issues of starting fieldwork and basic qualitative methods: observation and interview. The course is particularly recommended for those who work on a qualitatively based bachelor's thesis or for those who plan to realize a field research.
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
  • choose an appropriate type of research problem considering the possibilities of qualitative research methods
  • clarify the potentials and limits of using qualitative research methods
  • realize qualitative interview and observation
  • prepare a relevant field notes and transcript of an interview
  • reflect ethical issues, clarify the potentials and limits of ones own position in the field and its consequences for the realisation of data analysis

    Teaching methods
    Lectures, seminar discussions, research tasks, final reflexive report
    Assessment methods
    The course will be completed by colloquium. Admission to the colloquium is conditioned by reaching at least 60 points during the semester:
    1) Submitting three written tasks based on the fieldworks, and its follow-up presentations at the seminars (max. 75 points)
    2) Activity in seminar discussions (max. 25 points)
    It is possible to obtain extra points for these tasks by participating in lectures and seminars.
    Colloquium has the form of discussion about student’ “final reflexive report”. The student must achieve at least 60 points out of 100.
