Course objectives
The course brings an overview of the historical development of the Anabaptist movement from its beginnings in the 16th century until contemporary situation. Attention is paid mainly to the situation in the 16th century Moravia with a respect to the problems of social group dynamics and leadership. Following lectures are dedicated to further development of the Hutterites during the period of their migration to Transylvania, Russia and finally to USA and Canada.
Learning outcomes
After succesfull finishing of the course the students will be able: - to understand the beginning of Anabaptis movement in Europe with regard to its social, economical and political aspects; - to demonstrate basic knowledge about history of Anabaptism; - to critically use sources to the history of Anabaptism in Moravia; - to critically reflect modern scholarly concepts about Anabaptism in the Early Modern era.
Syllabus
  • (0) Introductory lesson. (1) Radical reformation and the beginnings of Anabaptism. (2) Spread of Anabaptism; persecution of Anabaptists. (3) Religious situation in 16th century Moravia. (4) Formation and relationships of Anabaptist groups in Moravia. (5) Everyday life in the colonies (work, education, family life). (6) Religious practice - feasts, liturgy, teology. (7) Authority and power, hierarchy in the Anabaptist groups. (8) Battle at Bílá hora and its impact on religious situation in Moravia. (9) Migration to Transylvania and Russia. (10) Hutterite in the US and Canada in the 20th century. (11) Hutterites in the US and Canada today; (12) Final test. For detailed overview of the course see the Study materials in IS.

Assessment methods
Requirements for colloquium:
(a) written essay (3-4 pages) Essay is a prerequisite for the final assesment, creates 25% of the final evaluation.
(b) final test at the end of the semester, consisting of 20 questions, 60% of correct answers is required. (75% of total evaluation of the course).
