Course objectives
The course will focus on the basic trends and problems associated with religiosity in Poland from the beginnings of Christianization to the present. The main attention will be paid to the relationship between national identity and religion, the religious interpretation of Polish history, role, and character of "Polish messianism", changes of Catholic religiosity in Poland, etc.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to: • orientate in the main events, trends, and figures connected with the history of Christianity and other religious traditions in Poland • to identify the basic factors influencing the specific role of Catholicism for modern Polish nationalism; • analyze and explain the causes of the phenomenon of cultural conflict/war in contemporary Polish society; • compare the situation in Poland and other countries in the region of Central and Eastern Europe.

  • 1. Introduction to the course 2. Basic periodization of Polish history / Basic historical and geographical information 3. The beginnings of Polish Christianity and its transformation in the High Middle Ages 4. Religious pluralism in early modern Poland 5. Jews in Poland 6. The crisis of the Polish state in the 17th and 18th centuries and its impact on the "re-catholisation" of Polish identity 7. Religion and the rise of Polish nationalism in the 19. century 8. Religion and society in the interwar and postwar Poland. 9. Restoration of the Polish state and conflict with communist power 10. Religion and Polish society after 1989. 11. Liberalization and continuing secularization of Polish society and conservative responses to them. 12. The phenomenon of a cultural war in contemporary Polish society

Assessment methods
The course ends with a colloquium. The overall evaluation includes: - Active participation in lessons (14 points = 10%; 7 seminars, each evaluated 0-2 points). - Readiness and active participation in discussions in seminars with reading or film (21 points = 15%; seminars, each evaluated 0-3 points). - Final test (100 points - 75%) For successful completion of the course, it is necessary to obtain at least 81 points out of 135 possible.
